Polar Bear Plunge

While most New Year’s partygoers on California’s Central Coast will be fast asleep come sunrise, some fearless folks will be donning their swimsuits and lining up to take part in the annual Polar Bear Plunge. Who knows when this unusual, adrenaline-fueled pastime first took place—or, for that matter, why—but over the last century it’s become a popular way to ring in the New Year.

If you’re interested—and brave—you can check out one of two Polar Bear Plunges on the Central Coast.

Carlin Soule’ Memorial Polar Bear Dip: Head over to the Cayucos Pier to join in the fun where the festivities begin at 9:30 AM with the official group plunge scheduled for 12 noon. Even if you get cold feet at the last minute, you’ll enjoy spectacular views and good times, a great way to start any new year.

Avila Beach Polar Bear Plunge: Ease into the New Year with a little fitness and fun. Head over to Avila Beach for a New Year’s stroll, a cup of coffee—or, a Bloody Mary—and if you’re interested in plunging into the Pacific with the other Polar Bears, jump in time is 11:45 AM—and you’re encouraged to wear a costume for additional fun.

Kicking off the New Year is a fun and exciting time full of possibilities. What are you looking forward to in 2018? Will this be the year you sell your current home? Buy your dream home? Are you looking to be close to the ocean, or looking for your own pool to plunge into?
